The University of Illinois System issued the following statement in response to proposed regulations released today governing campus sexual harassment and assault regulations:

The University of Illinois System and its member universities reaffirm their commitment to ensuring safe and welcoming institutions where students, faculty and staff are free to pursue their studies and work in respectful and supportive environments.

The universities and system offices will carefully review the U.S. Department of Education’s proposed changes to implementation of Title IX, and, as part of that process, we will offer appropriate comments or suggestions, as will many others.

System-wide and campus-based working groups representing every constituency at our universities will work independently and together to develop and put forward recommendations based on comprehensive assessments of current policies and processes, and on best practices. The U of I System also will respond in conjunction with national higher education organizations.

The safety of the university community is paramount and we will continue working to eradicate sexual misconduct through prevention, education and training, and to support and protect our community consistent with state and federal laws.
